جان سینگر سارجنت (1856 - 1925) در فلورانس ایتالیا و از پدر و مادری آمریکایی به دنیا آمد و در اثر تشویق مادر طراح آماتور خود و دوستان نقاش والدینش به طراحی که استعدادی هم در آن داشت روی آورد. او در سن چهارده سالگی در کلاس های طراحی آکادمی هنر دله بله در فلورانس جهت فراگیری طراحی شرکت کرد و در سال 1874 بود که در کارگاه کارلوس دوران ، یکی از نقاشان پاریس ، آموزش نقاشی را شروع نمود. وی در این کارگاه آموزش شیوه آزاد نقاشی را فرا گرفت و با سبک نقاشان قرن هفده نظیر ولاسکس و هالس آشنا شد. حرکات آشکار قلم و دیدی روشن بین در نمایش حرکات و حالات ویژه سوژه ها برای سارجنت شهرتی بین المللی بدست آورد. او در سال 1890 و با دستمزدهای کلانی که از مدل های شیک پوش خود می گرفت ، به لندن مهاجرت کرد. در همین سال بود که سفارش تزئین سالن کتابخانه عمومی بوستون را به عهده گرفت و بقیه عمرش را صرف کار روی این مکان نمود. وی در طی مسافرت به ایتالیا ، اسپانیا ، آلپ، خاور نزدیک و شمال آمریکا تصاویر غیر رسمی فراوانی را به وجود آورد. اغلب گفته می شود که این آثار آبرنگی و نقاشی های فی البداهه و درخشان حکایت از خسته شدن وی از چهره پردازی دارد. او به طراحی چهره با زغال نیز روی آورد و بیش از پانصد اثر در این زمینه دارد اما آثار رنگ و روغن او از 30 تابلو بیشتر نیست. او به عنوان دوست نزدیک مونه سهم زیادی در معرفی امپرسیونیسم به نقاشی انگلستان داشت.
John Singer Sargent was one of the great turn of the century artists. A true cosmopolitan, he was born in Italy to American parents, trained in Paris and then moved to London. Sargent quickly won fame and fortune as a fashionable portrait painter on both sides of the Atlantic. His dazzling society portraits are at once flattering, penetrating and brilliantly executed. A friend of Monet, he also made an important contribution to the introduction of Impressionism to England.He painted two United States presidents, the aristocracy of Europe, the new and emerging tycoons and barons of business -- Rockefeller, Sears, Vanderbilt; and he painted gypsies, tramps, and street children with the same gusto and passion. He hiked through the Rocky Mountains with a canvas tent under pouring rain to paint the beauty of waterfalls, and painted near the front lines during World War I to capture the horrors of war. He painted the back alleys of Venice, sleeping gondoliers, fishing boats and the dusty side streets of Spain. He painted opulent interiors and vacant Moorish Ruins. He painted the artists of his time -- performers, poets, dancers, musicians, and writers -- Robert Louis Stevenson, and Henry James. He painted the great generals of the Great War, and the Bedouin nomads in their camps. He painted grand allegorical murals, and his friends as they slept.
