Jan Esmann was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1960. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen and specialized in art restoration and old masters technique. He trained with the Danish artist Niels Hermann Wamberg for a few years. Jan is deeply engaged in spirituality and meditation and this influences his choice of subject. The persons in Jan Esmann paintings are either caught in the moment of pain where the soul lets go of the ego, or are caught in the state of rapture, where the soul and the spirit meet in blissful union. Ambivalence is also an important part of his subjects and what seems like meditation to one, may seem like death or sleep to another. He lives and works in Copenhagen, where he teaches painting as well as meditation. He regularly exhibits in Danish galleries as well as abroad and is a member of the artists society Rimbaud.
