Aaron M. Brown was born in Wichita, KS on April 4, 1964. His parents (John Gary Brown and Trudy Fornwalt Collins) are both artists. He received his BFA from the University of Kansas, and his MFA from Syracuse University, graduating summa cum laude from both institutions and earning a coveted University Fellowship from SU. He has received many awards over the years, including prestigious grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Franz and Virginia Bader Fund. He has participated in group and solo exhibitions internationally. His work has been featured in international publications such as New American Paintings and Harper’s magazine, and is included in numerous private and public collections. Following graduation, he worked for over a decade under his full name, Aaron Morgan Brown. His work during this period could be classified as a sophisticated form of magic realism, with an emphasis on precise rendering and complexity. His interest in the photograph, both as an image and an abstract subject, can be traced back to his father's work as a freelance photographer in Lawrence, KS during the 60s and 70s. After relocating to Pennsylvania with his wife, artist Ann Piper, a new directional impulse and body of work began to emerge. Although related to his former work in many ways, the new paintings offer a more subtle reimagining of the everyday world, and a renewed enthusiasm for the imperfect materiality of paint. These have always been abiding interests in any case. The evolution of an artist is often elliptical, a series of orbits around an already established sensibility, complete with seasonal changes.
